"EDP," "EDT," and "attar" get thrown around a lot in Pakistani perfume shopping, often without much explanation of what they actually mean. The difference isn't branding — it's the fragrance oil concentration, and it directly determines how long a scent lasts and how it wears.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Contains roughly 15–20% fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol. This is the concentration most people mean when they say "perfume," and it typically delivers 7–12 hours of wear. It's the most balanced option for daily use in Pakistan's climate — strong enough to last through a full day, without the heaviness of an oil-based attar.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
A lighter concentration, usually 5–15% fragrance oil. EDTs feel fresher and lighter on application but fade noticeably faster — often needing reapplication within 3–5 hours, especially in heat. EDTs work well for very light layering or hot climates where you specifically want a subtle, low-commitment scent.
Attar
An oil-based fragrance, typically alcohol-free, applied directly to skin rather than sprayed. Attars tend to have very strong, long-lasting sillage and a denser, closer-to-skin character than alcohol-based sprays. They're a distinct category rather than simply a "stronger EDP" — the alcohol-free base changes how the scent develops and how it interacts with skin oils.
Which Should You Choose?
- Want one dependable bottle for daily wear? A true EDP is the safest choice — strong enough to last, not so heavy it feels like overkill for an ordinary day.
- Want something ultra-light for layering or very hot days? An EDT can work, with the tradeoff of needing to reapply.
- Want maximum longevity and don't mind a denser, closer sillage? Attar is worth exploring, particularly for religious or cultural occasions where that style is traditional.
Why It's Worth Checking Before You Buy
A bottle labeled simply "perfume" without specifying concentration makes it hard to judge what you're actually getting. Always look for the EDP/EDT distinction (or confirmation it's an oil-based attar) before buying, especially online where you can't test longevity in person first.
