Every perfume changes on your skin over the first few hours — the scent you smell straight out of the bottle isn't the scent you'll be wearing at lunchtime. That's because fragrances are built in three layers, and understanding them makes it much easier to choose (and use) a perfume well.
Top Notes: The First 15–30 Minutes
Top notes are the lightest, most volatile molecules in a fragrance — usually citrus, light spices, or fresh herbal accords. They evaporate fastest, which is why the perfume you smell on a testing strip in-store often doesn't match how it wears an hour later. Top notes create the first impression, not the lasting one.
Heart (Middle) Notes: The Core of the Fragrance
Once the top notes fade, the heart notes emerge — typically florals, spices, or green accords. These make up the main body of the scent and are usually what people mean when they describe a perfume's overall character. Heart notes can last several hours and are the truest representation of a fragrance's identity.
Base Notes: What Stays With You
Base notes are the heaviest, slowest-to-evaporate molecules — woods, musks, amber, vanilla. They emerge as the heart notes fade and are responsible for a perfume's true longevity. A fragrance with a strong, well-built base is what allows a scent to last 8+ hours rather than fading after two.
Why This Matters When Buying a Perfume in Pakistan
If you only smell a perfume for a few seconds in a shop, you're smelling almost entirely top notes — which tells you very little about how it will actually wear. This is exactly why published note breakdowns matter: they let you judge a fragrance's real character and longevity before you buy, not just its opening impression.
